Jennifer Kaplan's Professional Life

I am currently a second year masters candidate and assistant instructor for the University of Texas at Austin department of mathematics. For Fall 2000, I am teaching "Foundations of Arithmetic," the first semester math course for pre-service elementary school teachers.

From 1994 - 1999 I was teaching high school mathematics at Colegio Internacional de Caracas. I taught the middle grades integrated math program as well as International Baccalaureate math classes. In order to keep up with the trends in education, I was a member of several math teacher listservs and I visited sites such as The Math Forum at Swarthmore.

In addition to my teaching load, I worked with Odyssey of the Mind. In 1997 - 1998, I coached one division two team (seventh and eighth graders) who solved the "Classics" problem by writing a skit about archeology. I often felt that working with them was like herding cats. but they got the job done and we went to Curacao in May to participate in the OM Latin American Showcase.

I had the pleasure of chaperoning a school field trip to view the full solar eclipse which was visible in the Falcon State of Venezuela on February 26, 1998. Read the article written about our students in the local English language paper (some photos included).

Finally, I was the department head and a member of several faculty committees - SePTiC which made decisions relating to technology issues, TAB which met regularly with the superintendent to discuss contractual issues and the like. I also helped interview principal candidates during a principal search. It was my first time on the 'other' side of the interview and I quite enjoyed it.
