Integrated Math 2 - Third Quarter Project - Casinos
- Introduction: Gambling is a big business and a lot of money is made at casinos. The casino earnings are then taxed by the government and create a lot of revenue for the country. Venezuela is considering legalizing gambling, for instance, privatizing the Hotel Avila as a casino hotel in order to generate more money for the state.
- Objective: Choose an existing casino game or create your own game. Explain the rules of the game and then calculate the probabilities of winning. Play the game with a few friends to find the experimental probabilities of winning. Use your theory and data to show that the casino always has the highest chance of winning.
- Will Include:
- An explanation of the rules of your game.
- A calculation of the theoretical probability involved in winning your game and an explanation as to how the calculations were done.
- A description of the experiment used to simulate or actually play your game and the experimental probabilities calculated through the experiment.
- A summary which explains, using the data you generated in your theoretical calculations and simulation, why the casino always makes money on your game.
- Due Date: The project will be due on Friday, April 4 before 3:00 pm.
- Did you....?
- Write each group members name on the project?
- Include a description of the rules of your game?
- Include a description of how you calculated the probabilities?
- Include a description of how you simulated the playing of the game?
- Include an explanation of how the game favors the casino?
- Proofread/spell check your document?
Assessment: The following five criteria will be considered in the grading of the project. Each will be given a grade from 1 to 4 following the guidelines given.
a. Planning
- An attempt is made to explain the rules of the casino game.
- The rules of the casino game are described, but not clearly enough to play the actual game without further verbal or written instructions.
- The rules of the casino game are described in full in a coherent manner so that the reader would play the game with no further explanation.
- The rules of the casino game are described in full in a coherent manner so that the reader would play the game with no further explanation and a hypothesis as to how the game favors the casino is given.
b. Analysis
- simple probability calculations are carried out
- probability calculations which are relevant to the game are carried out
- probability calculations which are relevant to the game are adequately carried out
- probability calculations which are relevant to the game are accurately carried out
c. Data Collection
- results of the simulation are given
- a plan for the simulation and the results of the simulation are given
- a plan for the simulation is given, that plan being appropriate for the task and the results are given
- a plan for the simulation is given that plan being appropriate for the task and a strategy for structuring the data is given before the results are given
d Evaluation
- conclusions are made
- conclusions, appropriate to the stated task, are made
- conclusions, appropriate to the stated task and which are consistent with the analysis, are made
- conclusions, appropriate to the stated task and which are consistent with the analysis, are made and the validity of the project or possible extensions are discussed
e. Communication
- Most stages of the project are described.
- All stages of the project are described.
- All stages of the project are recorded and described using appropriate language, symbols, tables and/or graphs.
- All stages of the project are recorded and described in a coherent and logical manner using appropriate language, symbols, tables and/or graphs
